Victoria Ward Park Mauka is an urban open space park located in Honolulu, Hawaii that transformed a previously developed site into a resilient, community-focused public landscape. The project achieved SITES Gold certification by integrating sustainable design, construction, operations, and educational strategies that restore ecological function while enhancing public access and community well-being.
Key sustainability achievements include regeneration of a previously developed site, extensive stormwater management that retains and infiltrates rainfall beyond baseline requirements, use of native vegetation, reduction of urban heat island impacts, and implementation of sustainable materials practices. The project incorporated salvaged materials, regionally sourced materials, and responsible material procurement practices while restoring soil health and protecting environmental quality during construction. The landscape was designed to promote accessibility, physical activity, social connection, and mental restoration for a diverse range of users.
Beyond environmental performance, Victoria Ward Park Mauka serves as a valuable community asset through sustainability education, interpretive elements, and ongoing performance monitoring.
